Salui, Malawi

Salui is a small fishing village on the western shore of Lake Malawi. In 2011, the population of the village was estimated at 800. The village consists of an estimated 100 straw and mud-straw huts of traditional Malawian construction separated into three small groups by drainage or irrigation areas. Dugout canoe-type boats are used by the local fishermen, as well as fishing barrier/walls and nets for communal or group fishing. A single Baptist church serves the village.

Gospelink Agricultural Training Center, Malawi

The Gospelink Agricultural Training Center is an outreach and mission center in the Salima district along Lake Malawi. The center serves as a food production center for the local villages while also serving as a training center for local farmers to learn about modern farming techniques and Christian spiritual training. The center consists of nearly 1000 acres and borders the west coast of Lake Malawi. Irrigation from the lake enables the growing of sugar cane and rice in the nearby fields.

1989 Malawi earthquake

The 1989 Malawi earthquake, a magnitude 6.6 quake, occurred on March 10, 1989 in central Malawi. At least 9 people were killed, 100 injured and damage was in the Salima-Dedza-Mchinji area. About 50,000 were left homeless in Malawi. It was felt strongly in much of central Malawi, Niassa and Tete Provinces of Mozambique, and parts of Zambia.

Salima District

Salima is a district in the Central Region of Malawi. The capital is Salima. The district covers an area of 2,196 km. ² and has a population of 248,214. The beach at Senga Bay is the weekend retreat of many from the capital, Lilongwe, and has hosted the annual Lake of Stars festival since 2008, when it was moved from Chintheche in order to be less remote. There is a range of accommodation options in the area, though most are a few km off the main road.
