Laguna de Manialtepec

The Laguna de Manialtepec is a coastal lagoon about 18 km west of Puerto Escondido in the State of Oaxaca, Mexico. The name comes from Náhuatl “manine” (lizard) and “tepetl” (place), meaning (place of lizards). Access to the lagoon by car is via Federal Highway 200 or by boat from Puerto Escondido. The lagoon is 15 km long with patches of leafy jungle and mangroves that reach 15 meters of height in some places .

Puerto Escondido International Airport (Spanish: Aeropuerto Internacional de Puerto Escondido) is an airport located at Puerto Escondido in the state of Oaxaca in Mexico. It handles national and international air traffic for the city of Puerto Escondido on the Pacific coast. It is operated by Aeropuertos y Servicios Auxiliares, a federal government-owned corporation.

Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca

Puerto Escondido is a small port and tourist center in the municipality of San Pedro Mixtepec Distrito 22 in the Mexican state of Oaxaca. Prior to the 1930s, no real town existed. The bay had been used as a port intermittently to ship coffee, but there was no permanent settlement due to the lack of potable water. The name Puerto Escondido had roots in the legend of a woman who escaped her captors and hid here. The Nahuatl word for this area was Zicatela, meaning “place of large thorns.

1999 Oaxaca earthquake

The 1999 Oaxaca earthquake occurred on September 30, 1999 at 11:31 local time in Oaxaca, Mexico, 60 km NNW of Puerto Ángel. The epicenter was located near San Agustin Loxicha. It had a magnitude of Mw 7.4. The maximum intensity reached MM VIII in southwestern Oaxaca, and could be felt strongly in Mexico City. The torrential rains preceding and following the temblor intensified the damage of this earthquake. 35 people were reported dead.
