Kyaukpyu Airport

Kyaukpyu Airport is an airport in Kyaukpyu, Burma. The runway of Kyaukpyu Airport was 4,620 feet long and 100 feet wide. It is able to handle Fokker F28 Fellowship jet aircraft used by Myanma Airways. It is planned to extend the runway by 1,000 feet in 2011 and 1,400 feet in next two years. After that it will have a length of 7,000 feet and a width of 100 feet.

Point, Kyaukpyu

Viewpoint, popularly known as Point is the principal attraction in Kyaukpyu, the major town of Rakhine State, Myanmar. Located at the northwestern most tip of the town it is an Urban park which looks out into where the Bay of Bengal and the mouth of the Kyaukpyu River meet. Kyaukpyu Viewpoint consists of a sightseeing tower and part of the Kyaukpyu Beach. One of the main roads of Kyaukpyu, the Strand Road leads to the entrance to Point.

Operation Matador (1945)

Operation Matador was an amphibious thrust, during the Burma Campaign in January 1945, to capture the strategic port of Kyaukpyu, located at the northern tip of Ramree Island, south of Akyab across Hunter's Bay, as well as the key airfield near the port. On 21 January 1945, an hour before the Indian 71st Brigade was to land, the battleship HMS Queen Elizabeth opened fire with her main battery while planes from the escort carrier HMS Ameer spotted for her.

Kyaukpyu

Kyaukpyu is a major town in Rakhine State, in western Myanmar. It is located on the north western corner of Yanbye Island on Combermere Bay, and is 250 miles (400 km) northwest of Yangon. The town is situated on a superb natural harbor which connects the rice trade between Calcutta and Yangon. The estimated population in 1983 was 19,456 inhabitants.
