The 40-kilometre long fjord begins around the Fleinvær islands; travels northeast past Sørarnøy, Sandhornøya, and Straumøya islands; along the southern shores of the town of Bodø; and ends at the village of Løding. The narrow Saltstraumen strait connects the Saltfjorden to the large, inland Skjerstadfjorden.

The white, stone and concrete church was built in 1959, and it was designed by Arnstein Arneberg. The church seats about 500 people. The church was built to replace an earlier, larger church built in 1877.
