Buka, Papua New Guinea

Buka is situated on Buka Island, Bougainville Province, Papua New Guinea. It has been the capital of the province during the Bougainville civil war. The former, or proper capital of Bougainville, Arawa was all but destroyed in 1990 as tensions reached a critical level in a civil uprising, which ended in 1997. Buka today is a bustling, peaceful town, detached by water from the main island Bougainville, and the much publicized tension there.

Buka Airport

Buka Airport is an airport serving Buka Island in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville (also known as North Solomons) in Papua New Guinea. It is located at the southern end of the island, near Buka Passage behind the town of Buka, and pre-war Chinatown. The airport terminal is about 1.5 kilometres from the Buka Township. It is the only airport serviced by a regular passenger transport service in the North Solomons Province. In 2004, the airport experienced some closures due to land disputes.

Battle of Porton Plantation

The Battle of Porton Plantation (8–10 June 1945) took place at Porton Plantation, near the village of Soraken on Bougainville Island, in the Solomon Islands archipelago during World War II. Involving forces from Australia, New Zealand and Japan, the battle was part of the wider Bougainville campaign, which had begun in late 1943 and lasted until the end of the war in August 1945.
