Watom Island

Watom Island is an inhabited island in the Bismarck Sea in Papua New Guinea, located just off the mainland of the northern coast of New Britain, near Rabaul. It lies to the northeast of Urara Island. The island is almost entirely forested except for a few scattered settlements. The highest point of the island is approaching 320 metres. Watom's Wall, a "classic wall dive well", located on the northern coast, is a notable diving location.

Urara Island

Urara Island is a small inhabited island in the northern part of Ataliklikun Bay in Papua New Guinea, located just off the mainland of the northern coast of New Britain. There are 3 villages, the largest lying on the southern central part of the coastline. Urara Island lies about 3 miles westward of Cape Liguan, and stands on a reef which extends a short distance only eastward of it and 1.5 miles to the westward.

Bombing of Rabaul (November 1943)

The Allies of World War II conducted an air attack upon a cruiser force at the major Japanese base of Rabaul in November 1943. In response to the allied invasion of Bouganville, the Japanese had brought a strong cruiser force down from Japan to Rabaul in preparation for a night engagement against the allied supply and support shipping.

Operation Cartwheel

Operation Cartwheel (1943–1944) was a major military strategy for the Allies in the Pacific theater of World War II. Cartwheel was a twin-axis of advance operation, aimed at militarily neutralizing the major Japanese base at Rabaul. The operation was directed by the Supreme Allied Commander in the South West Pacific Area (SWPA)—General Douglas MacArthur—whose forces advanced along the northeast coast of New Guinea and occupied nearby islands.

2000 New Ireland earthquakes

The 2000 New Ireland earthquakes were a series of large earthquakes that occurred off the coast of New Ireland Province, Papua New Guinea on November 16 and 17, 2000. The mainshock was a magnitude 8.0 Mw strike-slip event that occurred on November 16 at 04:54 UTC, and ruptured a section of the transform boundary between the north and south Bismarck plates.
