Freitas (Portugal)

Freitas is a village in Northern Portugal. It is the seat of an eponymous "freguesia" (Portuguese for civil parish), which in turn is part of the "concelho" (municipality) of Fafe. The civil parish has an area 6,24 km², with 745 inhabitants for a density of 119,4 people/km² (2001 census). The first lord of the village, a contemporary of the first king of Portugal, around 1164, became known as João das Freitas, hence initiating the surname Freitas.

Citânia de Briteiros

The Citânia de Briteiros is an archaeological site of Castro culture in the north-western Iberian Peninsula, significant for its size, urbanism, and architecture. Although primarily known for its remains of an Iron Age proto-urban hill fort, excavations at the site have revealed evidence of sequential settlements extending from the Bronze Age to the Middle Ages.

Guimarães Castle

Castelo de Guimarães (English: Guimarães Castle), located in the city of Guimarães, Portugal, was ordered to be built by Dona Mumadona Dias in the 10th century in order to defend its monastery from Muslim and Norman attacks. Count Dom Henrique (to whom the County of Portugal had been granted) chose Guimarães to establish his court. The fortress, then over a century old, needed urgent renovation.

It is the seat of a municipality with an area of 241,05 km² and 162 636 inhabitants (2008), divided in 69 parishes.
