Caniço is a parish in the municipality of Santa Cruz in the Madeira Islands. It was elevated to city status in 2005. The population in 2001 is 11,586, its density is 965.5/km² and the area is 23 km². Caniço is connected with the urban sprawl of Funchal and like Calheta, Caniço is larger than the seat of the municipality. The city of Funchal is bordered to its west. It is located 6 km E of Funchal. Caniço is surrounded with two streams, a shorter one in the west and a long stream to the east.

The stadium is currently able to hold 5,132 people and was built as a one-stand 2,500 seat stadium in 2000, when Nacional moved in.
