Fifth Battle of the Isonzo

The Fifth Battle of the Isonzo was fought from March 9–15, 1916 between the armies of the Kingdom of Italy and those of Austria-Hungary. The Italians, under immense pressure from the French commanders, had decided to launch another offensive on the Soča (Isonzo) River.

Gorizia Hills

The Gorizia Hills (Italian: Collio Goriziano or Collio; Slovene: Goriška Brda) is a hilly landscape in the northeastern Italy and the southwestern Slovenia. The region is predominately a white wine producer with Friulano, Ribolla Gialla, Malvasia Istriana, Chardonnay, Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio and Sauvignon blanc being the leading varietals. Red wine is produced under the Collio Rosso designation and is usually a blend of Merlot, Cabernet franc and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Venetian Slovenia

Venetian Slovenia is a small mountainous region in northeastern Italy . Most of the region is located in the Italian region of Friuli Venezia Giulia, in the area between the towns of Cividale del Friuli, Tarcento and Gemona . It is part of the Province of Udine in the region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia. A small part of the region is located in the municipality of Kobarid in Slovenia, in the mountainous area around the villages of Breginj and Livek.

Soča

The Soča or Isonzo is a 138 km (86 mi) long river that flows through western Slovenia and northeastern Italy . An Alpine river in character, its source lies in the Trenta Valley in the Julian Alps in northwestern Slovenia, at an elevation of 876 metres . The river runs past the towns of Bovec, Kobarid, Tolmin, Kanal ob Soči, Nova Gorica (where it is crossed by the Solkan Bridge), and Gorizia, entering the Adriatic Sea close to the Italian town of Monfalcone.
