Hongcheon County

Hongcheon (Hongcheon-gun) is a county in Gangwon Province, South Korea. It is the birthplace of historic general Choi Yeong of Goryeo. It is also the birthplace of Lee Young-Pyo, who plays for the South Korea national football team. He also plays for Vancouver Whitecaps FC of Major League Soccer. Hongcheon is the location of Daemyung Resort, Vivaldi Park, a ski resort and water park in the mountains.

Namiseom

Namisum is a tiny half-moon shaped island located in Chuncheon, South Korea, formed as it was inundated by the rising water of the North Han River as the result of the construction of Cheongpyeong Dam (청평댐) in 1944. Its name originated from General Nami (남이장군), who died at the age of 28 after being falsely accused of treason during the reign of King Sejo, the seventh king of the Joseon Dynasty of Korea.

Operation Ripper

Operation Ripper was a United Nations military operation conceived by the commander US Eighth Army, General Matthew Ridgway, during the Korean War. The operation was intended to destroy as much as possible of the Chinese communist People's Volunteer Army and North Korean military around Seoul and the towns of Hongch'on, 50 miles east of Seoul, and Ch'unch'on, 15 miles further south. The operation also aimed to bring UN troops to the 38th parallel.
