Together with the neighboring city of Icheon, it is known as a major center of contemporary South Korean ceramics, and hosts the World Ceramic Exposition every year. Other local products of note include rice, sweet potatoes, and yellow melons. Yeoju is the birthplace of Korea's last queen, Empress Myeongseong. Yeoju's institution of higher learning includes Yeojoo Institute of Technology.

Hankuk Academy of Foreign Studies
Hankuk Academy of Foreign Studies or HAFS is a private boarding school located in the northern part of Yongin, South Korea. It is the first Korean high school formed by a collaboration between the government and a university. Hankuk Academy is noted for its unique two person per room boarding system. All the students are required to live in the school dormitories for all three years, and are allowed to leave on weekends only.
