Unterwalden

Unterwalden (Latinized Sylvania, later also Subsylvania as opposed to Supersylvania) is the old name of a forest-canton of the Old Swiss Confederacy in central Switzerland, south of Lake Lucerne, consisting of two valleys or Talschaften, now organized as two half-cantons, an upper part, Obwalden, and a lower part, Nidwalden. Unterwalden was one of the three participants in the foundation of the Old Swiss Confederacy, named in the Pact of Brunnen of 1315 with Uri and Schwyz.

Lake Sarnen

Lake Sarnen is a lake in the Swiss canton of Obwalden. The lake is on the Sarner Aa river, which flows out of the Lake Lungern, through the Lake Sarnen, and into Lake Lucerne. The municipalities of Sarnen and Sachseln are located on the shores of the lake, and the Brünig railway line follows the eastern shore. The lake's area is about 7.5 km² and its maximum depth is 51 m. It is about 5.7 km long and, at its widest, 1.6 km wide.
