It has been the subject of recent (2002-present) excavation . The cultural sequence encompasses 11 prehistoric phases. The capital of the province is the city of Nakhon Ratchasima located in Mueang Nakhon Ratchasima District, also called Khorat. The Khmer name for the province is Nokor Reach Seima, the Malay name is Negara Raja Sima.

Thanon Chira Junction Station is the the main railway station in Nakhon Ratchasima Province. This station located in south side of the city moat in Nakhon Ratchasima.
