Grand-Popo

Grand-Popo is a town, arrondissement, and commune in the Mono Department of south-western Benin. The commune covers an area of 289 square kilometres and as of 2002 had a population of 40,335 people. The Finno-African culture centre Villa Karo has been situated in Grand-Popo since 1999. It grew around the slave trade, but coastal erosion has now destroyed most of the old town. The town is now a centre for voodoo and home to a Finnish – African cultural centre, Villa Karo.

Mono River

The Mono River is the major river of eastern Togo. Approximately 400 km long, and draining a basin of about 20,000 km, it rises between the town of Sokodé and the border with Benin, and flows south. Along the southern portion of the river towards its mouth, it forms the international boundary between Togo and Benin. The river drains into the Bight of Benin through an extensive system of brackish lagoons and lakes, including Lake Togo. Only the part of the river nearest its mouth is navigable.
