Strath of Kildonan

Strath of Kildonan, also known as Strath Ullie,, is a strath in Sutherland, in the north of Scotland. It extends in a north-westerly direction from Helmsdale towards Kinbrace. The River Helmsdale (also known as River Ullie) flows down the strath, and into the sea at Helmsdale. The A897 road runs along the strath, as does the Far North Line, with Kildonan railway station halfway along.

A897 road

The A897 single track road is entirely within the Highland council area of Scotland. It runs generally north from the A9 at Helmsdale to the A836 near Halladale Bridge, east of Melvich. The road passes through or near Kildonan, Kinbrace and Forsinard, and has a junction with the B871 at Kinbrace. It also passes through Achiemore. Helmsdale is on the east-facing North Sea coast of Britain. Melvich is about 40 miles (64 km) away, on the north-facing Atlantic coast.

Battle of Alltan-Beath

The Battle of Alltan-Beath also known as the Battle of Ailtan-Beath was a Scottish clan battle said to have taken place in the year 1542 in the village of Knockarthur (or Knockartel), in Sutherland, in the Scottish Highlands. It was fought between men of the Clan Mackay and Clan Sutherland. Accounts of the events and circumstances surrounding the battle vary in accounts from different historians.

Clynelish distillery

Clynelish Distillery is a distillery near Brora, Sutherland in the Highlands of Scotland. The distillery was built in 1968, adjacent to the original Clynelish distillery which was closed. Confusingly the original distillery was reopened in May 1969 and until July 1973 produced a heavily-peated whisky to supply for blending; this was done to cover a shortage of Islay whisky caused by a drought on the island.
