Lindores

Lindores is a small village in Fife, Scotland, about 2 miles south-east of Newburgh. It is situated on the north-east shore of Lindores Loch, a 44 ha freshwater loch. A possible derivation of the name Lindores is 'church by the water'. The ruins of Abdie church, about 0.5 miles south-west of the village are possibly the site of an ancient shrine connected to the celtic foundation at Abernethy. After the foundation of Lindores Abbey in 1191 the church was given to the abbey.

Palace of Monimail

The Palace of Monimail, also known as Monimail Tower, was a Renaissance palace in Fife, Scotland. Its remains are situated in the grounds of Melville House, near the tiny village of Monimail, 4 km north of Ladybank. Originally a residence of the Archbishops of St Andrews in the early seventeenth century, Monimail became a chief seat of the Melville family. Lord Monimail is one of the subsidiary titles of the Leslie-Melville Earls of Leven.

Letham, Fife

Letham is a small village in Fife, Scotland, located just off the A92, around 5 miles from Cupar. According to the 2001 Census, Letham has 138 residents, although this has without a doubt increased in the previous years. Its school, Letham Primary School, educates around 40 pupils, between the ages of 5 and 12. The school building itself is over 130 years old, and built mainly from sandstone which was quarried only 200 metres away from the school.

Lindores Abbey

Lindores Abbey was a Tironensian abbey on the outskirts of Newburgh in Fife, Scotland. Now a much reduced and overgrown ruin, it lies on the southern banks of the River Tay, about 1-mile north of the village of Lindores. The abbey was founded as a daughter house of Kelso Abbey about 1191 (some sources say 1178), by David, Earl of Huntingdon, brother of William the Lion. The first abbot was Guido, Prior of Kelso, under whom the buildings were mostly completed.

Melville House

Melville House lies to the southside of Monimail in Fife. It was built in 1697 by the architect James Smith (c.1645 - 1731) for George Melville, 1st Earl of Melville, incorporating the 14th Century Monimail Tower. The Melville State Bed was given to the Victoria and Albert Museum in London in 1949 where it is described as "the most spectacular single exhibit in the Victoria and Albert Museum's British Galleries".
