Girdwood, Anchorage

Girdwood is an unincorporated year-round ski resort community within the Municipality of Anchorage in the U.S. state of Alaska. It lies in a valley in the Chugach Mountains near the end of the Turnagain Arm of Cook Inlet, 36 miles (61 km) southeast of Anchorage proper. It is surrounded by seven permanent glaciers. Summer activities include hiking, fishing and rafting, but Girdwood is best known for winter skiing and snowboarding at Alyeska Resort on Mount Alyeska.

Girdwood Airport

Girdwood Airport is a state-owned public-use airport located three miles (5 km) northeast of the central business district of Girdwood, in Anchorage Borough, Alaska, United States. As per Federal Aviation Administration records, this airport had 2 passenger boardings (enplanements) in calendar year 2005 and 8,100 enplanements (all unscheduled) in 2006. According to the FAA's National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2007–2011, it is a general aviation airport.

Alyeska is an archaic spelling of the Aleut word Alaska meaning "mainland", "great country", or "great land". The American state of Alaska derives its name from this word. Alyeska is related to the word Unalaska from the same root. Alyeska, in loose translation, also means "the object towards which the action of the sea is directed," or "that which the seas breaks against.

Alyeska Resort

Alyeska Resort is a ski resort in Girdwood, Alaska, approximately 27 miles (44 km) from the city of Anchorage. Mount Alyeska is part of the Chugach mountain range and the Alyeska Resort is the largest ski area in the state.

KEUL

KEUL is a non-commercial radio station in Girdwood, Alaska, broadcasting on 88.9 FM. The station originally began as a non-licensed station, during a proliferation of such in the Anchorage area during the 1990s. Pressure from the Girdwood community in the wake of its impending shutdown, particularly from community leaders who recognized the need for a means to relay emergency information, led to its reinvention as a licensed station.
