Kayenta, Arizona

Kayenta is a census-designated place (CDP) which is part of the Navajo Nation and is in Navajo County, Arizona, United States. The population was 5,189 at the 2010 census. Kayenta is located 25 miles south of Monument Valley and contains a number of hotels and motels which service visitors to Monument Valley. Like other places within the Navajo Nation, it is illegal to serve alcohol. Arizona does not observe Daylight Time; however, the Navajo reservation does.

Kayenta Airport

Kayenta Airport is a public-use airport located two nautical miles southeast of the central business district of Kayenta, in Navajo County, Arizona, United States. It is owned by Kayenta Township, which is part of the Navajo Nation. As per Federal Aviation Administration records, the airport had 584 passenger boardings (enplanements) in calendar year 2005 and 1,535 enplanements in 2006.

Agathla Peak

Agathla Peak is a peak south of Monument Valley, Arizona, over 1500 feet (457 meters) high. It is 7 miles north of Kayenta and is visible from U.S. Route 163. The English designation Agathla is derived from the Navajo name aghaałą́ meaning 'much wool', apparently for the fur of antelope and deer accumulating on the rock. The mountain is considered sacred by the Navajo. Agathla Peak is an eroded volcanic plug consisting of volcanic breccia cut by dikes of an unusual igneous rock called minette.

Hunts Mesa

Hunts Mesa is a rock formation located in Monument Valley, just south of the border between Utah and Arizona in the United States and just west of the border between Arizona's Navajo County and Apache County. It is one of two popular interior destinations in the Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park for tourists to experience panoramic views of the popular sandstone formations from a distance. The other is Mystery Valley. A Navajo guide is required to hike to either.
