Mount Wrightson

Mount Wrightson is the highest point in the area around Tucson, Arizona, United States at an elevation of 9,453 feet (2,881 m.). Mount Wrightson is located in the Santa Rita Mountains 40 miles southeast of Tucson in the Coronado National Forest. It was named for William Wrightson, who was a miner and entrepreneur in the region. He was killed in the 1860s by Apaches during the Battle of Fort Buchanan.

Santa Rita Mountains

The Santa Rita Mountains, located about 65 km (40 mi) southeast of Tucson, Arizona, extend 42 km (26 mi) from north to south, then trending southeast. They merge again southeastwards into the Patagonia Mountains, trending northwest by southeast. The highest point in the range, and the highest point in the Tucson area, is Mount Wrightson, with an elevation of 9,453 feet (2,881 m), The range contains Madera Canyon, one of the world's premier birding areas.

Fort Buchanan, Arizona

Fort Buchanan, was a United States Army post founded in 1856 three miles southwest of present day Sonoita, Arizona in what is now called Hog Canyon. The fort was located on the east slope of the canyon and under constant attack by native Americans. It was officially abandoned in 1861 but during the American Civil War troops of the California Column occasionally manned the post. In February 1865 Apaches attacked and forced the small garrison to retreat.
