Boston Mountains

The Boston Mountains area is a high and deeply dissected plateau located in northern Arkansas and eastern Oklahoma. The Oklahoma portion of the range is locally referred to as the Cookson Hills. The rocks of the region are essentially little disturbed, flat-lying sedimentary layers of the Paleozoic age. The highest ridges and peaks are capped by Pennsylvanian sandstone and shale. The deeply eroded valleys are cut into Mississippian limestones and below that layer Ordovician dolomites.

Sam's Throne

Sam's Throne is a hard sandstone rock climbing area in the Boston Mountains of north central Arkansas, located in the Ozark – St. Francis National Forest. The area is covered extensively in the guide "Arkansas Rock" Volume 1 by Clay Frisbie from Boston Mountain Press. The surrounding area contains over one hundred named climbing routes of various difficulty and is serviced by a paved Forest Service Road from the town of Mount Judea, Arkansas.
