Gold Canyon
Gold Canyon is located a few miles south of Alleghany, California, on the border between Sierra and Nevada Counties. The middle fork of the Yuba River flows through the canyon. Gold mining began in Gold Canyon in the early 1850s and has continued to present day. Three major gold mines are located here: German Bar Mine, Gold Canõn Mine, and Independent Mine. Before power was brought to the area, the nearby Plumbago Mine built a power plant on the river next to the present day bridge.

Lake Spaulding Dam
Lake Spaulding Dam (National ID # CA00358) is a dam in Nevada County, California. Owned and operated by Pacific Gas & Electric, the 275-foot -high dam was completed in 1913 for hydroelectric power generation. It impounds the South Fork of the Yuba River, which originates near Donner Pass. At the time of construction it was the highest dam in California, and one of ten PG&E hydroelectric facilities. The nearby settlement of Camp Spaulding, California was established to house workers.

French Lake Reservoir

The earthen, rock-fill French Lake Dam was first constructed in 1859, and is a candidate for the first use of rock-fill in an engineered dam. Reconstructed in 1948, it impounds Canyon Creek for flood control, irrigation water storage, municipal drinking water, and hydropower. The dam is 100 feet high, with a length of 300 feet at its crest.
