Topaz Lake

Topaz Lake is a reservoir located on the California-Nevada border, about 75 miles south of Reno. The census-designated place of Topaz Lake, Nevada is located along its northwest shore. The lake was formed by diverting waters from the West Walker River into a nearby basin that had previously contained a smaller, natural lake. The initial construction took place in 1922, resulting in a reservoir with a capacity of 45,000 acre feet .

Monitor Pass

Monitor Pass (el. 8,314 ft. / 2,534 m) is a high mountain pass in California in the Sierra Nevada southeast of Lake Tahoe. It connects the basins of the West Walker River and Carson River, and is traversed by State Route 89 near that highway's southern terminus at U.S. Route 395 near the community of Topaz. The highway through the pass was completed in the early 1950s, making it one of the most recent Sierra Nevada passes to be opened by a paved road.

Leviathan Mine

Leviathan Mine is a United States superfund site at an abandoned open-pit sulfur mine located in Alpine County, California. The mine is located at on the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada at about 7,000-foot elevation, 6 miles east of Markleeville and 24 miles southeast of Lake Tahoe. The mine site comprises approximately 250 acres of land surrounded by the Toiyabe National Forest, which is only accessible a few months a year.

Loope, California

Loope (formerly, Loopeville and Monitor) is an unincorporated community in Alpine County, California. It is located on Monitor Creek, at an elevation of 6188 feet (1886 m). A post office operated at Monitor from 1863 to 1888. The Loope post office operated from 1898 to 1908. The place was originally named from the nearby Monitor Mine, which in turn was named for the Civil War naval vessel. It was renamed in honor of a Dr.
