Dominguez Canyon rail crash (1937)
The Dominguez Canyon rail crash and sometimes referred to as the ""Wells Gulch rail crash"", occurred on April 26, 1937, as the train was traveling Northwestward from Delta to Grand Junction, Colorado, on the D&RGW tracks, near Dominguez Canyon. The trestle had burned out earlier that same day, leaving the rails hanging unsupported over Wells Gulch. Due to the darkness, the engineer was not able to see the danger ahead until it was too late.

Uncompahgre Plateau
The Uncompahgre Plateau in western Colorado is a distinctive large uplift part of the Colorado Plateau. Uncompahgre is a Ute Indian word that describes the water: "Dirty Water" or "Rocks that make Water Red". The plateau, with an average elevation of 9,500 feet, rises from the Colorado River 4,600 ft to Horsefly Peak 10,300 ft . It continues on about 100 miles southeast to the northwest margin of the San Juan Mountains.
