Blue Mesa Reservoir

Blue Mesa Reservoir (elevation 7,519 feet) is the largest body of water entirely in Colorado. Created by Blue Mesa Dam, Blue Mesa Reservoir is 20 miles long, has 96 miles of shoreline, and is the largest lake trout and Kokanee salmon fishery in the United States. Blue Mesa Dam was completed in 1965 and was the first large dam built along the Gunnison River. U.S. 50 travels along the banks of the lake, and crosses it on the Lake Fork Arm and at Middle Bridge.

Middle Bridge

Middle Bridge is the crossing of Blue Mesa Reservoir on U.S. Route 50 near Sapinero, Colorado. Prior to the construction of the Blue Mesa Dam, Rt. 50 did not cross the Gunnison River there, and a portion of the old highway can be seen descending into the lake. The bridge is located within Curecanti National Recreation Area.
