Ruskin, Florida

Ruskin is an unincorporated census-designated place in Hillsborough County, Florida, United States. U.S. Route 41 currently runs through the center of the community. The town was founded August 7, 1908 on the shores of the Little Manatee River. It was developed by Dr. George McAnelly Miller, an attorney and professor at Ruskin College in Trenton, Missouri, and Mrs. Adaline D. Miller. He established the short lived Ruskin College in Florida.

Little Manatee River

The Little Manatee River flows almost 40 miles, from east of Fort Lonesome, Florida through southern Hillsborough County, Florida and northern Manatee County, Florida into Tampa Bay. It has a drainage basin of 222 square miles . It flows along the Little Manatee River State Park for part of its route. Portions of the river have been designated as an Outstanding Florida Water and are part of the Cockroach Bay Aquatic Preserve.

Greater Sun Center, Florida

Greater Sun Center, known more commonly as Sun City Center, is an unincorporated census-designated place located in southern Hillsborough County, Florida, United States. It is located south of Tampa and north of Sarasota on I-75. As of the 2000 census, the population was 16,321. However, the Chamber of Commerce estimated the number to be approximately 19,000, including 500 retired military officers. The Zip Code serving the community is 33573.

Cockroach Bay Aquatic Preserve

Cockroach Bay Aquatic Preserve is a protected area that includes 4,800 acres of partially submerged lands in Hillsborough County near Ruskin, Florida south of Tampa, Florida. Archaeological evidence from indigenous tribes have been found in the area. The coastal uplands, freshwater wetlands and estuarine habitats provide sanctuary for young fish including red drum and snook as well as numerous birds, crustaceans and other species. Aquatic habitats include seagrass and oyster beds.
