According to the 2010 census, it has a population of 60,218, which is an increase of 1.0% from 59,612 in 2000. Its county seat is Murphysboro; its most populous city is Carbondale, home to the main campus of Southern Illinois University. The Carbondale Micropolitan Statistical Area includes all of Jackson County.
