Clay County, Iowa

Clay County is a county located in the U.S. state of Iowa. The population was 16,667 in the 2010 census, a decline from 17,372 in 2000. Its name is in honor of Henry Clay, Jr. a colonel who died in action in the Mexican-American War, and son of Henry Clay, famous American statesman. Its county seat is Spencer. It also holds the annual Clay County Fair. The very first newspaper in Clay County was the Peterson Patriot which started circulation in 1880.

Clay County Fair

The Clay County Fair is held every September in Spencer, Iowa. It is the largest county fair in the state of Iowa. It has the second largest agricultural exposition in North America. Bringing in over 310,000 visitors a year, the Clay County Fair is one of the largest county fairs in the United States. 2011 set attendance records of 328,000. Beginning in 1918, the fair has grown considerably over the past near century. In its first year the Clay County Fair brought in 30,000 guests.
