Cawker City, Kansas

Cawker City is a city in Mitchell County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 469. The city is located along the north shore of Waconda Lake. It is one of several places claiming to be home of the largest ball of twine in the world.

Waconda Spring

Waconda Spring, or Great Spirit Spring, was a natural artesian spring located in Mitchell County, near the towns of Glen Elder and Cawker City in the U.S. state of Kansas. It was a sacred site for Native American tribes of the Great Plains and, for a time, became the site of a health spa for American settlers. With the completion of the Glen Elder Dam in 1968, the mineral spring disappeared beneath the waters of Waconda Reservoir.

Waconda Lake

Waconda Lake is a reservoir near Glen Elder, Kansas in northwestern Mitchell County and extending westward into northeastern Osborne County. It is fed by the Solomon River, of which both forks form the lake. Cawker City is located on the north shore of the lake, as is Glen Elder State Park. The lake was formed by Glen Elder Dam, a project of the United States Bureau of Reclamation built from 1963 to 1969. Waconda Spring was flooded by the lake's creation.
