Lake Afton Public Observatory
Lake Afton Public Observatory (LAPO) is an astronomical observatory located nine miles (14 km) from Cheney, Kansas, in the Lake Afton County Park. It was established in 1979 through the cooperation and support of Sedgwick County, the City of Wichita, and Wichita State University's Fairmount Center for Science and Mathematics Education. Since then the Observatory has been operated by Wichita State University's Fairmount Center with additional funds from Sedgwick County for facilities.

Lake Afton
Lake Afton is a 258-acre man-made recreational lake located about 25 miles southwest of Wichita, Kansas, U.S.A. It is within the 720-acre Lake Afton Park, on land once inhabited by the Kiowa, Comanche, Wichita (tribe), Osage, and Southern Cheyenne Indian tribes. The lake was created by Works Progress Administration workers in 1939–1942.

Sedgwick County Fair
The Sedgwick County Fair has been held in Cheney, Sedgwick County, Kansas, United States since 1940. Floyd Souders, a citizen of Cheney began working on having a county fair in the community in 1939. Even though Cheney was one of the smaller towns in the county, it had been successful in hosting a Fall Festival, and Mr. Souders thought Cheney would be a good site for a county fair. Mr. Souders owned and ran the town newspaper, and also served in the Kansas House of Representatives.
