Breathitt County, Kentucky

Breathitt County is a county located in the U.S. state of Kentucky. It was formed in 1839. The population was 13,878 in the 2010 Census. Its county seat is Jackson, Kentucky. The county is named for John Breathitt who was Governor of Kentucky from 1832 to 1834. Breathitt County is a prohibition or dry county.

Jackson City School

Jackson City School (under the Jackson Independent School system) is a school serving grades pre-k through 12. It is located in the hills of Eastern Kentucky, in Jackson, Kentucky -- the county seat for Breathitt County. The elementary school portion is named after Herbert W. Spencer, after it was rebuilt in the 1960s due the original elementary school caught fire. Though, locally, it's still referred to as Jackson Elementary or just Jackson City School.

Breathitt County High School

Breathitt County High School (aka Breathitt High School) is a public high school located in the city of Jackson, Kentucky nestled in the Appalachian Mountains of Eastern Kentucky. The 2009-2010 enrollment is around 520 students. The school colors are royal blue and white. The current principal is Derek McKnight, and the current assistant principal is Michael Bowling.

Jackson, Kentucky

Jackson is an incorporated city and the county seat in Breathitt County, Kentucky, United States. Originally established as Breathitt Town in 1839, the name was changed to Jackson in 1845. The city is named in honor of the war hero of the War of 1812 and former President of the United States of America, Andrew Jackson, who had died that same year of the name change. The population was 2,244 according to the 2010 census.
