Colfax, Louisiana
Colfax is a town in and the parish seat of Grant Parish, Louisiana, United States. The town, founded in 1869, is named for the vice president of the United States, Schuyler M. Colfax, who served in the first term of U.S. President Ulysses S. Grant, for whom the parish is named. Colfax is part of the Alexandria, Louisiana Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 1,659 at the 2000 census.

Colfax massacre
The Colfax massacre or Colfax Riot (as the events are termed on the official state historic marker) occurred on Easter Sunday, April 13, 1873, in Colfax, Louisiana, the seat of Grant Parish. In the wake of a contested election for governor of Louisiana and local offices, an armed group of whites, armed with rifles and a small cannon, overpowered freedmen and state militia (also black) trying to control the Grant Parish courthouse in Colfax. White Republican officeholders were not attacked.

The Battle of Monett's Ferry was fought on April 23, 1864, between Union and Confederate forces. The Union Army was led by Nathaniel P. Banks. They crossed a river to attack Confederate forces, and were victorious, having forced the rebels to retreat.

Grant Parish, Louisiana
Grant Parish (French: Paroisse de Grant) is a parish located in the U.S. state of Louisiana. The parish seat is Colfax (pronounced CAHL-facks). It is part of the Alexandria, Louisiana, Metropolitan Statistical Area and Red River valley. From 1940-1960, the parish had a dramatic population loss, as many African Americans left in the Great Migration, to seek better opportunities elsewhere. Such migration continued until about 1970. As of 2000, the population was 18,698.

KLAX-TV is the ABC-affiliated television station for Central Louisiana licensed to Alexandria. It broadcasts a standard definition digital signal on UHF channel 31 from a transmitter in the Kisatchie National Forest southwest of Dry Prong. The station can also be seen on Suddenlink channel 3. Owned by the Pollack/Belz Broadcasting Company, KLAX is sister to low-powered Retro Television Network (RTV) affiliate KWCE-LP and the two outlets share studios on England Drive/LA 498 in Alexandria.
