Rockwood, Maine

Rockwood is a village in Somerset County, Maine, United States. The village is centered on the west end of Moosehead Lake, the largest body of fresh water in the state. Rockwood is a gateway to the north country and is located near Mount Kineo. Rockwood is an unincorporated community with a significant enough population base to have its own post office, telephone exchange, and elementary school but it has never been organized as a plantation or incorporated as a town.

Moose River (Maine)

The Moose River is an 83-mile-long river in Maine. Its source is in Beattie (Maine Township 2, Range 8, WBKP), on the Canada – United States border, which runs along the height of land between the watersheds of the Kennebec River in Maine and the Chaudière River in Quebec. From there, the river runs east through Attean Pond and Wood Pond, past the town of Moose River, then through Long Pond and Brassua Lake.

Moosehead Lake

Moosehead Lake is the largest lake in the U.S. state of Maine and the largest mountain lake in the eastern United States. Situated in the Longfellow Mountains in the Maine Highlands Region, the lake is the source of the Kennebec River. Towns that border the lake include Greenville to the south and Rockwood to the northwest. There are over 80 islands in the lake, the largest being Sugar Island.

Roach River (Maine)

The Roach River is a river in Piscataquis County, Maine. From the outlet of Third Roach Pond in Shawtown (Maine Township A, Range 12, WELS), the river runs 19.1 miles west, through Second and First Roach Ponds. The Roach River empties into Moosehead Lake, the source of the Kennebec River, in Spencer Bay (T1, R14, WELS).

Sugar Island (Maine)

Sugar Island is an island located in Maine's Moosehead Lake. It is roughly four miles long and two miles wide (at its widest/longest points). Sugar Island is Moosehead Lake's largest island. They are located in the unorganized territory of Northwest Piscataquis, Maine. Sugar Island is mainly accessed through Lily Bay State Park, and takes about five minutes from the state park by boat. There is a fee at the state park of three dollars.
