Castine, Maine

Castine is a town in Hancock County, Maine, United States and served as the capital of Acadia (1670–1674). The population was 1,366 at the 2010 census. Castine is the home of Maine Maritime Academy, a four-year institution that graduates officers and engineers for the United States Merchant Marine and marine related industries. Approximately 850 students are enrolled. During the French colonial period, Castine was the southern tip of Acadia and briefly served as the capital of the region.

Penobscot Expedition

The Penobscot Expedition was an American naval expedition sent to reclaim Maine, which the British had conquered and renamed New Ireland. It was the largest American naval expedition of the American Revolutionary War and is sometimes thought the United States' worst naval defeat until Pearl Harbor. The fighting took place both on land and on sea, in what is today Castine, Maine.

Fort George (Castine, Maine)

Fort George was an earthworks fort built by the British to defend their new founded colony New Ireland during the American Revolutionary War. The fort is most well known for helping to defeat the American patriot Penobscot Expedition's attempt to reclaim the territory. Fort George is listed on the NRHP in Maine. The roughly 3-acre remains of the fort are located on the Bagaduce Peninsula in the town of Castine, Maine. The British dug a defensive canal that is still visible in satellite photos.

Pentagoet Archeological District

The Pentagoet Archeological District is a National Historic Landmark District located in Castine, Maine. This district forms part of the traditional homeland of the Abenaki Indians, in particular the Penobscot tribe. In the colonial period, Abenakis frequented the fortified trading post at this site, bartering moosehides, sealskins, beaver and other furs in exchange for European commodities. The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1993.
