Battle of Mathias Point

The Battle of Mathias Point, Virginia was an engagement between the Union gunboats USS Thomas Freeborn and USS Reliance, together with a landing party of about 36 Union sailors or marines, and Confederate States Army defenders at Mathias Point on the Potomac River in King George County, Virginia, near Maryland's Popes Creek. The action occurred on June 27, 1861, in the third month of the American Civil War, before significant battles, other than the Battle of Fort Sumter, had taken place.

The United States Naval Surface Warfare Center, Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD), named for Rear Admiral John A. Dahlgren, is located in Dahlgren, Virginia and is part of the Naval Surface Warfare Center. The NSWCDD was founded as the U.S. Naval Proving Ground on October 16, 1918, as a result of the expanded range on large caliber naval guns brought about by the launching of the British battleship HMS Dreadnought that revolutionized seapower, but was renamed some time after 1950 to the U.S.

Potomac Speedway is a 3/8 mile clay oval raceway located in Budds Creek, Maryland, near Charlotte Hall. The raceway was first raced on in 1973. Races are typically held on Friday or Saturday nights. Regular events include Super Late Models, Limited Late Models, Street Stocks, and Hobby Stocks and 4 cylinders. The speedway also holds events for Modifieds, Crate Late Models, Strictly Stocks and Hornets.
