Chapel Point State Park

Chapel Point State Park is a 600-acre state park in the state of Maryland. It is located on the Port Tobacco River, a tributary of the Potomac River, in Charles County, Maryland. The park is largely undeveloped, but features fishing and hunting. Adjacent to the park is St. Ignatius Church and cemetery, the oldest continuous Roman Catholic parish in the United States, with a very scenic river view.

The Port Tobacco River is a tidal tributary of the Potomac River located in Charles County, Maryland in the United States. The river is approximately 4.2 miles in length. The river was once the site of the thriving Port Tobacco, the county seat of Charles County from 1658 to 1895.

Battle of Mathias Point

The Battle of Mathias Point, Virginia was an engagement between the Union gunboats USS Thomas Freeborn and USS Reliance, together with a landing party of about 36 Union sailors or marines, and Confederate States Army defenders at Mathias Point on the Potomac River in King George County, Virginia, near Maryland's Popes Creek. The action occurred on June 27, 1861, in the third month of the American Civil War, before significant battles, other than the Battle of Fort Sumter, had taken place.
