Fort Defiance (Maryland)
Fort Defiance was an earthworks fortification on the western bank of the Elk River in northern Maryland. The fort was in use from 1813 to 1815 during the War of 1812 and repelled British forces on April 29, 1813. Today, there is a historical marker located approximately 660 feet northwest of the original site of the fort.

Herring Island (Elk River)
Herring Island is a 2 acre private property at the mouth of the Herring Creek in Cecil County, Maryland. It has played a considerable role in local history, with local Native tribes hunting there and the English camping there during the War of 1812. Herring Island formed during the 17th century with the erosion of Herring Creek's peninsula into an island. From the early 20th Century until the 1970s it was a Boy Scout Camp, consisting of numerous log cabins.
