Swanton, Maryland

Swanton is a census-designated place (CDP) in Garrett County, Maryland, United States. Swanton is close to several recreation areas like Deep Creek Lake State Park and Jennings-Randolph Lake. A church and a post office are in the downtown area. The population was 58 at the 2010 census. Anderson Chapel was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.

Savage River Reservoir

The Savage River Reservoir is a 360 acres storage reservoir in northwest Maryland. It was completed in 1952 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers who also currently maintain it. The reservoir was formed by the Savage Dam which impounds the Savage River. The reservoir itself has a maximum capacity of 31,800 acre feet and is used for flood control and municipal drinking. The Savage River Dam is an rock-fill, earthen dam, 184 feet high, 1,050 feet long and drains an area of 105 square miles .

1989 ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships

The 1989 ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships were held on Savage River in Garrett County, Maryland (western part of the state) near Pittsburgh in the United States under the auspices of the International Canoe Federation. As of 2009, it is the only time the championships have ever been held in the United States. Italy won its first ever medal at these championships.

Jennings Randolph Lake

Jennings Randolph Lake is a reservoir of 952 acres located on the North Branch Potomac River in Garrett County, Maryland and Mineral County, West Virginia. It is approximately eight miles upstream of Bloomington, Maryland, and approximately five miles north of Elk Garden, West Virginia.

Big Run State Park

Big Run State Park is a state park in the state of Maryland. It is located in Garrett County, Maryland and features campsites, fishing, flat water canoeing, hiking trail, historic interest, picnic facilities, and shelters. The main part of the park is located at the northern end of the Savage River Reservoir. A boat launch is available there in the summer months when the reservoir is full.
