Ripley, Michigan

Ripley is a small, unincorporated community in Franklin Township situated upon a slope, just east of Hancock on M-26 and across the Portage Lake Canal from Houghton. A ski resort called Mont Ripley is located in Ripley. The now-closed Quincy Smelting Works, formerly operated by the Quincy Mine, is also located in Ripley.

Mont Ripley

Mont Ripley is a ski hill located in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. It is owned by Michigan Technological University. It was founded in the early 1900s (by Fred Lonsdorf) and has since grown to one of the premier ski hills in the American Midwest. With the addition of snow making in 2000, the season has been extended from late November to late March or early April. Mont Ripley is known for its challenging terrain and spectacular views of Houghton, Portage Lake and the Huron Mountains.

Michigan Technological University

Michigan Technological University (commonly referred to as Michigan Tech, MTU, or simply Tech) is a public research university located in Houghton, Michigan, United States. Its main campus sits on 925 acres on a bluff overlooking Portage Lake. Michigan Tech was founded in 1885 as the first post-secondary institution in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, and was created to train mining engineers to operate the local copper mines.

Dee Stadium, also called The Dee, is an ice hockey arena in Houghton, Michigan, that replaces, and is located on the same site as, the Amphidrome. It is regarded as the birthplace of professional hockey, and is the seventh oldest indoor ice rink in the world.

Portage Lake District Library

Portage Lake District Library is a public library located in Houghton, Michigan, which serves the city of Houghton and Chassell and Portage Townships. The Portage Lake District Library participates in the Michigan eLibrary (MeL) and is a member of the Superiorland Library Cooperative. Patrons can check out books on a wide variety of subjects from Easy Reading to Adult Nonfiction. The Portage Lake District also includes a room dedicated to Michigan History and Genealogy.
