Lower Sioux Indian Reservation
The Lower Sioux Indian Reservation, also known as the Mdewankanton Tribal Reservation, is an Indian reservation located along the southern bank of the Minnesota River in Redwood County, Minnesota, east of the city of Redwood Falls, in southern Morton. The land became part of a reservation after the signing of the Treaty of Traverse des Sioux in 1851, but has now shrunk to a very small size. As of the 2000 census, the site had a population of 335, and a land area of 2.705 sq mi (7.006 km²).

Battle of Birch Coulee
The Battle of Birch Coulee occurred September 2, 1862 during the Dakota War of 1862. After the Battle of Fort Ridgely and the Battle of New Ulm, Colonel Henry Hastings Sibley was planning to punish the Sioux and to obtain the release of the settlers they were holding captive. While Sibley was training soldiers and attempting to organize supplies, he was reminded that the bodies of many settlers killed by the Indians still remained unburied on the battlefields.

Thomas Wakeman
Thomas Wakeman (1846 – January 13, 1886) was a Native American who organized the first Sioux Indian YMCA. Over the years, 66 Sioux associations have been founded with over 1000 members. As of 2000, the Sioux YMCAs, under the leadership of a Lakota Board of Directors, operate programs serving families and youth on the 4,500-square-mile Cheyenne River Indian Reservation. Chief Little Crow of the Sioux had a son named Wawinape in 1846. Little Crow and Wawinape survived the Dakota War of 1862.
