Mesabi Range
The Mesabi Iron Range is a vast deposit of iron ore and the largest of four major iron ranges in the region collectively known as the Iron Range of Minnesota. Discovered in 1866, it is the chief deposit of iron ore in the United States. The deposit is located in northeast Minnesota, largely in Itasca and St. Louis counties. It was extensively worked in the earlier part of the 20th century. Extraction operations declined throughout the mid-1970s but rebounded in 2005.

Itasca County is a county located in the U.S. state of Minnesota. It is named after Lake Itasca, which is in turn a shortened version the Latin words veritas caput, meaning 'truth' and 'head', a reference to the source of the Mississippi River. As of 2010, the population was 45,058. Its county seat is Grand Rapids. Portions of the Bois Forte and Leech Lake Indian reservations are in the county.

Deer Lake is located in Itasca County, Minnesota about 12 miles north of Grand Rapids and about 8 miles NE of Deer River. The lake covers 4,156 acres and is roughly 5 miles long and 1.5 mi wide. Deer Lake is fed by three sources: rainfall, underwater springs, and one inlet from Little Deer Lake. It belongs to a chain of pristine lakes, feeding Bay Lake - headwaters of the mighty Deer River (namesake of the town) which feeds White Oak Lake (part of the Mississippi River).
