The station, initially assigned "WXAB" on July 17, 1992, was known by that call sign for its entire existence. In December 1996, Community Broadcasting, Inc. , reached an agreement to sell WXAB to TraLyn Broadcasting, Inc. The FCC approved the deal on February 19, 1997, and the transaction was formally consummated on July 1, 1997.

The Chickasawhay River is a river, about 210 miles long, in southeastern Mississippi in the United States. It is a principal tributary of the Pascagoula River, which flows to the Gulf of Mexico. The Chickasawhay's tributaries also drain a portion of western Alabama. The name "Chickasawhay" comes from the Choctaw word chikashsha-ahi, literally "Chickasaw potato".
