Purvis, Mississippi

Purvis is a city in Lamar County, Mississippi. It is part of the Hattiesburg, Mississippi Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 2,164 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Lamar County. The Town of Purvis was incorporated on February 25, 1888 and was founded by and named after Thomas Melville Purves, originally of Marion County, Alabama. Purves, born March 8, 1820 was a second generation Scottish-American whose grandfather immigrated to Charleston, South Carolina in 1765.

Purvis High School

Purvis High School is a school within the Lamar County School District. It is located in Purvis at the address: 220 School St. Purvis, MS 39475. The school colors are Purple and Gold. The school mascot is a tornado, named after the deadly, destructive tornado that shook the town on April 24, 1908.

Hickory Hills Lake

Hickory Hills Lake is a privately owned freshwater lake in eastern Lamar County, Mississippi, southwest of the town of Hattiesburg. The lake was constructed in 1974, and is surrounded by a subdivision of 2 to 12-acre homesteads.

Lamar County, Mississippi

Lamar County is a county located in the U.S. state of Mississippi. It is part of the Hattiesburg, Mississippi Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of 2010, the population was 55,658. Its county seat is Purvis. Named for the post-Civil War Mississippi statesman Lucius Quintus Cincinnatus Lamar, the county was carved out of Marion County to the west in 1904. It is largely a rural county, except for its northeast quarter, which is within the Hattiesburg metropolitan area.

Forrest County, Mississippi

Forrest County is a county located in the U.S. state of Mississippi. It is part of the Hattiesburg, Mississippi Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of 2010, the population was 74,934. Forrest County was carved out of the western portion of Perry County in 1908. It is named in honor of Nathan B. Forrest, a Confederate general in the American Civil War and the first Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan. Its county seat and largest city is Hattiesburg.
