The community was founded in 1876 and is named after a railroadman of that name. Durham is part of the Quincy, IL–MO Micropolitan Statistical Area.

WCOY is a 100,000 watt country radio station based out of Quincy, Illinois. In 1998, the STARadio Corporation group purchased five stations in the Quincy, IL and Hannibal, MO area.
