Tarkio is a city in Tarkio Township, Atchison County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,583 at the 2010 census . It was platted in 1880 and incorporated in 1881. The name "Tarkio" is from a Native American word meaning "place where walnuts grow". Historically, the economy of the city was based on agriculture and its status as a college town.

Tarkio College

Tarkio College was a college that operated in Tarkio, Missouri from 1883 to 1992 and then reopened in 2012. The institution was supported by the United Presbyterian Church in the United States of America. It was closed after filing for bankruptcy protection in 1991 and then was reopened in 2012 as a continuing education institution for professionals.

Atchison County, Missouri

Atchison County is a county located in Northwest Missouri in the United States. As of the 2010 U.S. Census, the county had a population of 5,685. Its county seat is Rock Port. The county was organized February 14, 1845 and named for U.S. Senator David Rice Atchison from Missouri.
