The community was named for a nearby creek whose water had a dark, coffee-brown color and for the story where two miners tasted coffee and said "bah" then spit back into the creek nearby and called it Coffee Creek It is located along Montana Highway 81 in west central Fergus County, several miles northwest of Denton.
