Hopatcong is a borough in Sussex County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough's population was 15,147, reflecting a decline of 741 (-4.7%) from the 15,888 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn increased by 302 (+1.9%) from the 15,586 counted in the 1990 Census. \t The area had been called "Brookland" in the 19th century and the lake that was expanded to become Lake Hopatcong had been known as "Great Pond" or "Brookland Pond".

Lake Hopatcong

Lake Hopatcong is the largest freshwater body in New Jersey, United States. About 4 square miles (10 km²) in area, the lake is in the state's northern mountains, north of Netcong and along the border between Sussex and Morris counties. The lake sits within four municipalities: Hopatcong, Jefferson Township, Roxbury Township, and Mount Arlington. In the 18th century, the lake existed in two separate parts known as the "Great Pond" on the south and "Little Pond" on the north.

Bertrand Island, New Jersey

Bertrand Island, New Jersey, is a small peninsula in Lake Hopatcong, part of the community of Mount Arlington. It is best known as the former site of the Bertrand Island Amusement Park which existed from 1928 to 1983, as well as being the place of origin for Bette Cooper, Miss America 1937. Prior to the building of the amusement park, Bertrand Island actually was an island. Now there is a large isthmus of land leading to it, making it a peninsula. It is shaped somewhat like a spoon.

Mount Arlington is a borough in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2000 United States Census, the borough's population was 5,050, reflecting an increase of 387 (+8.3%) from the 4,663 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn increased by 1,033 (+28.5%) from the 3,630 counted in the 1990 Census. It is located on the southeast shore of Lake Hopatcong, New Jersey's largest lake and a major recreational resource.

Hopatcong State Park

Hopatcong State Park is a state park in Landing, New Jersey. Operated and maintained by the New Jersey Division of Parks and Forestry, the park consists of two discrete parcels of land, one that encompasses Lake Hopatcong and a parcel of land on its southwestern shore, and another that encompasses Lake Musconetcong about one mile to the west-southwest. The park contains remnants of Morris Canal, which operated from the 1830s to the 1920s and was largely fed by the lake.
