As of the 2010 United States Census, the CDP's population was 4,933. Highland Lakes has its own Post Office with the ZIP code 07422.

Vernon Township is a township in Sussex County, New Jersey. It is located about one hour drive from New York City and is part of the New York Metropolitan Area. As of the 2010 United States Census, the township's population was 23,943, reflecting a decline of 743 (-3.0%) from the 24,686 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn increased by 3,475 (+16.4%) from the 21,211 counted in the 1990 Census. It is both the most populous municipality and the largest in area in the county.

Mountain Creek Waterpark
Mountain Creek Waterpark is a seasonal water theme park located in Vernon Township, New Jersey, USA, on the property of the Mountain Creek ski resort. The park is open roughly from Memorial Day to Labor Day yearly, although weather-related delays and extensions are possible. Like the ski resort, the Mountain Creek waterpark is owned by the adjacent Crystal Springs Resort, who purchased it from Parques Reunidos' American subsidiary Palace Entertainment.

Action Park
Action Park was an amusement park, open from 1978 to 1996 in Vernon Township, New Jersey at the former Vernon Valley / Great Gorge ski area, now known as Mountain Creek. It featured three separate attraction areas: an alpine slide, Motorworld, and Waterworld. The lattermost was one of the first American waterparks. Many of Action Park's attractions were unique, attracting thrill-seekers from across the New York City metro area.
