Pine Barrens (New Jersey)

The Pine Barrens, also known as the Pinelands, is a heavily forested area of coastal plain stretching across more than seven counties of southern New Jersey. The name "pine barrens" refers to the area's sandy, acidic, nutrient-poor soil. European settlers' attempts to cultivate their familiar crops there were unsuccessful. Waterford Township is a township in Camden County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the township's population was 10,649, reflecting an increase of 155 (+1.5%) from the 10,494 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn declined by 446 (-4.1%) from the 10,940 counted in the 1990 Census. Waterford Township was originally created by Royal charter on June 1, 1695, while the area was still part of Gloucester County.
