Organ Needle

Organ Needle is the highest point of the Organ Mountains in the south-central part of the US state of New Mexico. It lies in Doña Ana County, 13 miles east-northeast of Las Cruces and 4 miles southwest of White Sands, headquarters of the White Sands Missile Range. It is at the southeast end of a narrow ridge of vertically-jointed granite called The Needles. Organ Needle is one of the most dramatic peaks in the state. True to its name, it is a steep, pointed summit.

San Augustin Mountains

The San Augustin Mountains are a small mountain subrange at the southern terminus of the San Andres Mountains east of Las Cruces, New Mexico. Organ lies at the southwest foothills; the townsite, White Sands, NM lies to the southeast at the southwest of the Tularosa Valley.

Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System

The Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) is a network of American communications satellites (each called a Tracking and Data Relay Satellite) and ground stations used by NASA for space communications. The system was designed to replace an existing network of ground stations that had supported all of NASA's manned flight missions. The prime design goal was to increase the time spacecraft were in communication with the ground and improve the amount of data that could be transferred.

White Sands Missile Range

White Sands Missile Range (WSMR) is a rocket range of almost 3,200 square miles in parts of five counties in southern New Mexico. The largest military installation in the United States, WSMR includes the Oscura Range and the WSMR Otero Mesa bombing range. WSMR and the 600,000-acre McGregor Range Complex at Fort Bliss to the south, form a contiguous swath of territory for military testing.
