Ahoskie, North Carolina

Ahoskie is a town in Hertford County, North Carolina. The population was 5,039 at the 2010 census. Ahoskie is located in North Carolina's Inner Banks region. Its nickname is "The Only One" because no other town in the world is known by the same name. The origin of the word Ahoskie, which was originally spelled "Ahotsky," came from the Wyanoke Indians who entered the Hertford County area at the beginning of European settlement.

Roanoke-Chowan Hospital

Roanoke-Chowan Hospital is a hospital located in Ahoskie, North Carolina. It is a part of the University Health Systems of Eastern Carolina (UHSEC). In the 1930's, James David Early of nearby Early's Station community was a major supporter of building a hospital in Ahoskie and committed land for the project. After his death, his son, James Bertram Early, Sr. , completed the transaction donating the land. In 1948, the hospital was the first to use the Hill-Burton Act for construction.
